Medical Microneedling is certainly not new! In fact it has been around for decades, but the procedure has developed into a much safer effective treatment modality, yielding significant results.

How does it work?

The procedure itself involves the insertion of very fine short needles into the skin allowing for instant skin rejuvenation. This may sound gruesome to some, but the procedure is relatively painless, and some of my clients have described the feeling as ‘small pin pricks’ to the skin.

The idea is that these pinpricks cause slight injury to the skin, triggering the production of new collagen-rich tissue. In essence, it uses the skins own regenerative potential to heal effectively! The small channels created in the skin also allow better absorption of potent serums and skincare creams and products into the deeper layers of the skin.

What can be treated with microneedling?

-Hyperpigmentation

- Deep set static lines and wrinkles

- Sagging skin

- Acne scarring (particularly sunken scars/pitting)

- Surgical/Chicken pox scars

- Enlarged pores and congested skin

- Oily/Combination skin

- Sun damaged skin

-Hair loss

Having said that, although this treatment is widely advertised as having no downtime, clients do experience redness- so I always advise to allow up to 24 hours for the skin to settle. The treatment can also be used as part of a bigger treatment care package, alongside anti-wrinkle and dermal filler injections to optimise results. It is also a great option for those who cannot afford the downtime and are on a tighter budget.

What devices are used?

There are generally two types of devices: rollers and electronic pen devices.

Rollers are manual devices that can be used by anyone at home for basic skin rejuvenation, but results are limited and if not used properly, can be traumatic and damaging to the skin.

Specific skin concerns require deeper and more controlled skin penetration and multiple treatments, usually with pen devices. These are always and only offered in a professional setting and must be carried out by an accredited aesthetic practitioner.

What you need to know AFTER treatment

Avoid areas of extreme temperatures, such as saunas, steam rooms, direct sun exposure and exercise for 24 hours. Makeup must be avoided, until redness settles after which the client can wear mineral makeup and use clean makeup brushes.

Who cannot have this treatment

-Pregnant or breast feeding

-Active acne or undergoing other acne treatment such as taking prescribed Roaccutane

-Skin cancer

-Skin infections

-Bleeding disorders/on blood thinning medication
